Periodontal Maintenance and Deep Cleaning

Periodontal MaintenanceOnce your periodontal treatment is completed, your dentist and dental hygienist will recommend routine periodontal maintenance, or deep cleanings, to maintain your periodontal health and prevent gum disease. Daily brushing and flossing is good to control plaque and tartar buildup, but harder to reach areas will need special attention.

What you can expect at your periodontal maintenance and deep cleaning appointment:

The process begins with an initial consultation with a periodontal specialist who will speak to you about your health history and examine any existing restorations. All tooth surfaces are also checked to see if any tooth decay exists. The depth of pockets around your teeth are measured and your mouth is examined for abnormal changes. X-rays are taken to evaluate the teeth and the bone supporting the teeth.

A comprehensive cleaning performed by a registered dental hygienist will follow, where all plaque and calculus (tartar) buildup will be removed. Your teeth will then be polished, removing any stains or leftover plaque around your teeth. Topical prescription medication may be applied if necessary to reduce tooth sensitivity and other problems.
